Above Nothing

Above Nothing is a performance series devised by Julia Witas, rouge-ah and Anna Lucia. It creates a landscape for artists and musicians who construct their works within the transformative and sentimental realms. Rooted in an experimental approach to music, Above Nothing navigates the sacred, the profane and everything in between by creating narratives through sound, poetry and visual arts. Performance evenings feature an array of cross-disciplinary works in the spheres of drone, dark ambient, experimental pop, noise and spoken word.

- Anna Lucia

Centered around a magnetic vocal delivery, Anna Lucia fuses elements of poetry, film-score and drone into ecstatic pop dirges that oscillate between hope and despair and allow dark and powerful moments to co-exist with passages of fragility and softness. Through her lyrics she channels characters; playing with the audience's perspectives and expectations using a method of alternative storytelling, which dips anachronistically in and out of different histories, both imagined and real. With her rich, androgynous vocals often inviting comparisons to Nico and Anohni, her performances challenge sonic notions of gender and genre. Besides performing solo, Anna Lucia is the singer and front woman of the band Anchoress.

With an intuitive, experimental approach towards sound exploration and songwriting, Julia Witas’s work finds its place along the edge of concert and performance art, where improvisation and chaos disrupt the musical composition. By utilizing dynamic vocals, field recordings and multi-instrumental, atmospheric soundscapes, her sound oscillates between devouring distortion and poetic fragility. Characterized by emotional intensity and visceral immediacy, her performances serve as intimate realms and energetic, ritualistic experiences.

- rouge-ah

Urška Preis, aka rouge-ah, is a composer, harpist, visual artist, and writer. Under the moniker rouge-ah they explore sound, and are currently researching dreams, nightmares and other sleep disruptions. Their main instruments are acoustic and electric harp, with a tendency of extracting uncharacteristic sounds from them. Since relocating to Berlin in spring 2022, rouge-ah has become a regular at some of the edgiest live music venues in the city, carrying their electric harp and effects pedals everywhere, from smoky underground basements to cozy Neukölln record shops to Berghain Kantine, always bringing fresh and unexpected sounds, from layers of delicate notes to roars of feedback and distortion that seem to conceal an orchestra or a choir in full flow.

Maria Ferrers creative practice revolves mainly around performance and installation, giving life to immersive sensory experiences where different disciplines interconnect, such as sculpture, sound and movement. Inspired by anatomy and using the body as her material, she seeks to juxtapose its symbolic and historical weight, with the spectacularity and unpredictability of the present moment.
